The Uganda Wildlife Authority has managed to habituate 5 gorilla groups in Rushaga sector than any other sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Rushaga gorillas in Uganda that are ready for tracking are grouped in families that include; Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye and Bweza. This translates in 40 gorilla permits available for booking daily. Nshongi.
Nshongi has got 7 members, initially it had over 18 members but due to the disagreements and wrangles among the members, the group had to split and some members part ways forming the Bweza family.Nshongi family got its name from Nshongi river the spot where it was first sighted. It was officially introduced for tracking in 2009 by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Kahungye.
Kahungye was introduced for tracking in 2011 after going through habituation process for over 2 years. It was named after the hill known as Kahungye where it was first sighted.This family is led by a silverback known as Rumanzi and its made up of 17 members. Like Nshongi and Bweza,Kahungye also had some conflicts and wrangles amongst themselves and part ways in 2012 forming a new gorilla family called Busingye.Memebers that make up the Kahungye gorilla family include 3 Silverbacks,3 blackbacks,3 adult females,3 sub-adultys,2 infants and 3 juveniles.
Bweza.
Bweza is located in the southern part of the national Park, This family broke away from the Nshongi gorilla family after having some wrangles and disagreements among the members. A silverback called Kakono spear headed the break away and challenged the leadership of Nshongi silverback and letter formed a new family at the end of 2013.Now the family is made up of 12 members with 4 blackbacks,2 silverbacks,3 adult females,2 infants and 1sub-adult.
Mishaya.
Mishaya is a peaceful gorilla family found in the Mishaya region of the forest, this family has 12 members and among them is one silverback known as Mishaya who also acts the leader of the family. The Mishaya family was created out of Nshongi group and expanded from 7 members to 12 members because of Mishaya who fights battles and able to conquer new members.
Busingye
Busingye is a peaceful gorilla family that was formed after parting ways from the Kahungye group, A silverback Rwigi led the battle with the Silverback of Kahungye and in the formed a new family Busingye.This family was introduced for tracking in August 2012.It gets its name from the hill called Busingye that inhabits this particular family.Busingye as a family broke away with 9 members.
In the year 2014, the family was blessed with a new member and now it has 10 members. These members include,4 female adults,1 Silverback,1 sub-adult,2 male infants and 2 juveniles.Busingye has got the most playful and interesting members that give joy to tourists that are assigned to track them.
We provide you with current information and figure of Gorilla groups, however these figure keep changing depending on the newly born gorilla babies that are introduced to the particular family, Conflicts among members,divorce,members migrating to another family, death of a gorilla member and any other factors that may attribute to the change in the numbers of a current member.
